PITCHING IN TO HELP PUT OUT
Rockies Colorado Fire Relief Efforts
In late June, devastating wild fires near Colorado Springs, Fort Collins and Boulder, Colo. left the Centennial State reeling in one of the worst natural disasters the state has ever seen. In the face of adversity, however, there are often opportunities to come together as a community, to aid our neighbors in need.

On June 29 and 30, Coors Field became a donation hub for fire relief efforts as each gate was manned with Rockies staff-and players at some gates-collecting money for families affected by the fires, as well as for the first responders and fire fighters who bravely stepped up to the plate. In the first two days alone, fans donated about $32,000 at Coors Field. For their part, the Rockies have pledged to match, dollar for dollar, all fan donations up to $50,000. So, as of July 1, the Rockies and their fans have raised about $64,000 for Colorado wild fire relief efforts.

The Rockies will be accepting donations through July, so visit coloradorockies.com/firerelief to find out how you can help.

LEARNING FROM THE BEST
Rockies Youth Baseball Camp
On June 26 and 27, the Rockies hosted the first-ever Colorado Rockies Youth Baseball Camp. The two-day camp took place at Coors Field and participants were able to fine-tune their skills under the watchful eye of the entire Rockies Major League coaching staff. Clinic participants were given customized Rockies jerseys with their name on the back and spent two days playing on the same field as their favorite big leaguers.

Not only was the event fun and educational for the youth who participated, it was also an important fundraiser for the Colorado Rockies Charity Fund. The camp featured over 125 players and all of the money raised from the camp will go directly to help fund the Rockies' Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities (RBI) program in 2013, helping to fund youth baseball and softball programs in Colorado.

WELCOME TO DENVER
Vochol
Vochol at DIA
If you've been to Denver International Airport lately, you may have noticed that someone appears to have illegally parked their car inside the main terminal. But this Volkswagen Beetle is not lost; rather, it is part of an artistic display created and arranged by 2011 Colorado Rockies Hispanic Adult Leadership Award Winner Marcela De La Mar.

In her continuing efforts to positively promote Mexican culture though the Mexican Cultural Center and the Consulate General of Mexico, De La Mar worked with DIA to display the special piece of art for people traveling through Denver or picking someone up at the airport. Inspired by the Vochol, a unique kind of Mexican art that involves decorating a Volkswagen Bug with traditional Mexican Huichol beads, the project was created with the help of students from Denver Public Schools.

The Huichol beads are arranged to create symbolic pictures and patterns, then glued to the car. Each bead design on the car has specific meaning that represents various aspects of the culture and history of Mexico, such as the importance of corn, deer and eagles in Mexican culture. The VW Bug, in itself, is also a reflection of Mexican culture in that they are a very common vehicle throughout Mexico.

De La Mar's Vochol will be parked at DIA until August 31, so make sure to stop by when you're traveling to take some photos and learn more about Mexican culture.

PLAYER SPOTLIGHT
Tyler Colvin
After being acquired from the Chicago Cubs this past offseason, outfielder Tyler Colvin has quickly made an impact for the Rockies this season. After 200 at-bats, Colvin was hitting .295 with 40 RBI, 12 doubles, five triples and 13 home runs. Even more impressive, left-handed hitting Colvin was hitting .341 against left-handed pitchers in his first 58 games and .326 with runners in scoring position. Colvin's athleticism and versatility-he has played all three outfield positions and first base so far this season-makes him even more valuable to the Rockies and he's shown the ability to come up big in late-game situations.

A native of August, S.C, Colvin attended Clemson University and was a first-round pick by the Cubs in 2006.

"YOUR STORY, OUR TEAM" FAN STORY
All season, fans have been sharing their own unique Rockies stories to the Rockies website and they have been featured online as well as in Rockies Magazine. Here is one of those stories:

After the 2009 season I wrote a letter to the Rockies front office. In the letter I basically told them about how I was a huge fan, even though I'm from Wisconsin, and all the reasons why I loved the team. I also mentioned that I thought the organization was doing a great job.

About two weeks later, there was a message on my phone from the office of then president Keli McGregor. He called back about a week later and told me he enjoyed my letter so much that he wanted to personally talk to me about it. The whole time he was talking I couldn't believe it was the president of my favorite team on the other end. I mean, what president of a major sports organization actually takes time out of his day to call a fan that simply wrote a letter? A few days after the call, I received a package in the mail full of Rockies goodies and a card from Mr. McGregor.

The following season, the Rockies started off with a series in Milwaukee, which I was lucky enough to attend. Before the game, after the Rockies took batting practice, I was able to meet Keli McGregor, Dan O'Dowd, Charlie Monfort and Dick Monfort. In fact, I got to jump the railing and stand on the field for a picture with them. The Rockies ended up winning the game, which was the icing on the cake of my perfect day. Unfortunately, two weeks later, Mr. McGregor passed away. It was on that day that I realized how really amazing my whole experience was, and all because of a simple letter.
