The Avett Brothers

In a heartfelt personal letter penned by Seth Avett, Grammy Award®-nominated alternative folk collective The Avett Brothers revealed that they will be releasing their new album, True Sadness, on Friday June 24, 2016.

The record reflects The Avett Brothers' artistic, musical, and personal evolution over 16 years as a band. During this time the band gained the wisdom to recognize that their musical pursuits and daily lives were not mutually exclusive. Now they can see how their lives and music are bound together. And that the nourishment of one benefits the other - even if it isn't always clear at the time.

It is with this newfound focus on the harmony between their art and their lives that they wrote the material on their upcoming album. Describing what's to come on the horizon, Seth writes, "True Sadness is a patchwork quilt, both thematically and stylistically. Wherein a myriad of contrasting fabrics make perfect sense on the same plane, this album draws upon countless resources from its writers and performers." To further the expansive color and textural fields of the record, the musical family had to grow. Joining the core of The Avett Brothers (Seth, Scott, bassist Bob Crawford, and cellist Joe Kwon) are drummer Mike Marsh, pianist Paul Defiglia, and fiddler Taia Elizabeth. Seth writes, "We are blessed to play and perform music with a group of musicians who possess not only great talent, but great interpretive ability. They are an extension of our family and their care for the work at hand (and the project at large) informs a dynamic musical contribution to any piece we proudly give our last name."

Sonically, the album is as multidimensional as its makers. There are moments of undeniable celebration and camaraderie, others of quiet and lonely exhalation. Throughout the album, different sonic textures were stitched together, like each member brought their own fabric to the quilting frame.

This summer, the group will play some of the world's most iconic venues on its full-scale North American headlining tour. For a full tour itinerary visit The Avett Brothers official website.
