Rockies at the plate: Brad Hawpe got the Rockies on the scoreboard with a solo homer with one out in the fourth inning. Geronimo Gil singled in two runs with a two-out single in the seventh.

A's at the plate: Mike Piazza got the A's going with an RBI double off the base of the right-field wall in the bottom of the first inning, and Eric Chavez followed with his second homer of the spring to give Oakland an early 3-0 lead. Milton Bradley padded the lead in the third with his first homer of the spring, a solo shot to right, and Nick Swisher added his fifth homer of the spring, also a solo shot, in the fourth. Jason Kendall singled in the fifth and scored from first on a double to left by Shannon Stewart.

Rockies on the mound: Righty starter Jason Hirsh gave up six runs on three homers, two doubles, a single and a walk without a strikeout over six innings to take the loss.

A's on the mound: Righty Chad Gaudin, who will work out of the bullpen during the regular season, started and gave up one hit while striking out four without a walk over three innings. Righty Kiko Calero pitched a perfect sixth, extending his spring-long streak of scoreless outings to eight.

Cactus League records: Rockies 13-11-1; A's 14-11-1

Up next: A's lefty Joe Kennedy opposes righty Dave Bush of the host Brewers in a 1:05 p.m PT start Tuesday at Maryvale Baseball Park. Also Tuesday at 2:05 p.m. MT, Rockies righty Josh Fogg will take on lefty Dana Eveland of the host Diamondbacks in Tucson, Ariz.
