PHOENIX -- When his head began to clear from a concussion he suffered when hit with a pitch on Aug. 10, Rockies utilityman Jeff Baker was touched by the efforts of Cubs pitcher Jason Marquis to reach out to him.

An errant Marquis fastball hit Baker in the batting helmet and face. Marquis left the game immediately, then repeatedly checked on Baker. It took a couple of days for Baker to feel good enough to show appreciation.

"I had heard he was trying to get in touch with me," Baker said. "So a couple days later, that Sunday, the doctor cleared me, and I went over to talk to him. I know he didn't mean to do it. Nobody wants that to happen.

"I told him to keep doing what he was doing, and I was going to keep doing what I was doing."

Baker was activated from the disabled list Saturday night, as was center fielder Willy Taveras, who had missed 16 games with a right quadriceps strain. Also, on the first day the active roster could be expanded from 25 to 40, the Rockies purchased the contract of first base prospect Joe Koshansky from Triple-A Colorado Springs.

Before returning, Baker batted .231 with a double, a home run and two RBIs during an injury rehab assignment at Colorado Springs. He said it took a few games to regain his timing and get past any apprehension to stand in the batter's box. But he accomplished it without wearing any special protection on his face.

"I just went with my normal helmet," he said. "I didn't want to wear an extra flap or something across my face, because I wanted to get [the incident] out of my head."

Taveras was back in the lineup as the leadoff hitter, with second baseman Kazuo Matsui hitting second. Koshansky batted .295 with 30 doubles, 21 home runs, 99 RBIs and 79 runs scored in 136 games for Colorado Springs.

Koshansky will be used mainly as a left-handed bat off the bench.

Rockies manager Clint Hurdle said the Rockies plan to make more moves after Monday, when Colorado Springs plays its final game of the season.

Rare comeback: The Rockies' 7-3 victory over the Diamondbacks on Friday night, after having trailed 3-0 going into the eighth and 3-2 before the bottom of the ninth, was a rare comeback. The Rockies had been 0-30 on the road when trailing after eight innings this season. It was their first road victory in that situation since last July 23 -- also over the Diamondbacks.

Winning record: The Rockies' 15-14 mark in August gave them a fourth straight winning month, a franchise record. The team's 3.82 ERA for the month was third-best in the National League behind the Cardinals (3.77) and the Giants (3.80).

Up next: Rockies righty Josh Fogg (7-9, 5.10 ERA) will face Diamondbacks righty Brandon Webb (14-8, 2.63) in the series finale Sunday at 2:40 p.m. MT.
