But the reeling Rockies started slow, rallied slightly and lost their second straight game, 7-4, to the red-hot Phillies before a crowd of 34,716 on Tuesday at windy and rainy Citizens Bank Park.
One day after a 20-5 drubbing, the Rockies managed 11 hits, but their final push came too late. To make matters worse, they had to endure a 1-hour, 27-minute rain delay in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Colorado starter Ubaldo Jimenez labored through a 36-pitch first inning and never recovered, as the Phillies struck for four hits and four runs. Greg Dobbs stroked a two-run single to right field to open the scoring, plating Jimmy Rollins and Shane Victorino. Victorino appeared to be out, but he knocked the ball out of catcher Yorvit Torrealba's glove and stepped safely on home plate.
Torrealba left Monday's game in the late innings because of dizziness, but returned to the starting lineup again on Tuesday.
Pedro Feliz added a two-run double to left for a 4-0 advantage.
"I think the hits had a lot to do with the extended counts," Rockies manager Clint Hurdle said of Jimenez. "It's not like he was wild. I thought he was just missing off the plate here and there."
In the second, Jimenez allowed three runs with two outs on RBI doubles by Chase Utley and Geoff Jenkins and a one-run single by Ryan Howard for a 7-0 lead.
Jimenez surrendered 10 hits and seven earned runs in four innings, easily his worst performance of the season.
But Hurdle wasn't concerned about his talented young pitcher.
"He actually had pretty good stuff tonight," Hurdle said. "The line is not descriptive of the action and velocity, but at the end of the day, it is what it is."
The Rockies fell to 1-10 in Jimenez's starts this season, with his only victory coming April 8 against the Braves.
"Tonight was better than my last start because I had more velocity on my fastball," Jimenez said. "It was not the same result, but I felt good."
Like his previous outings, Jimenez didn't receive much run support. He has gotten only 25 runs scored in his starts.
Willy Taveras did manage an RBI groundout in the fifth, scoring Omar Quintanilla.
Seth Smith was a bright spot for the Rockies with a 3-for-5 performance, including a double. Smith raised his average to .267 and showed glimpses of the player who was 5-for-8 in seven games last September for the playoff-bound club.
"It's been a day-to-day learning curve for me," Smith said. "I'm working hard every day to get better. It's a great feeling to be in the lineup and get some at-bats."
Ryan Spilborghs added a two-run homer in the eighth -- his third of the season -- off Tom Gordon.
Third baseman Garrett Atkins was back in the lineup after missing the last three games with a stiff neck and sore back. He finished 1-for-5 and didn't have any recurring pain after the game.
"I felt good," Atkins said.
There hasn't been a whole lot to feel good about over the last two games against the Phillies, who have scored 42 runs over their last three games and 27 in two straight against the Rockies.
"I think if we pitched better, they might not be as hot," Hurdle said.
