Fuentes blew a save Saturday night at Detroit, then was touched for five ninth-inning runs and another loss Monday night against the Padres. Immediately after that latest 15-8 loss to the Padres, Fuentes watched a replay.
"Normally, I don't, but last night after the game I watched tape, because I had time to kill, and I was curious," Fuentes said.
The two bad outings came after Fuentes had converted seven straight save opportunities. But the location of his fastball and the movement on his breaking ball have been less than desirable in his last two outings. He believes he has the answer.
"I've been pitching for a while now, and I knew when I was out there pitching there was something off," said Fuentes, who has been invited to the last three All-Star Games. "I try to make little adjustments while I'm out there, but I wasn't able to make those adjustments last night.
"I think the delivery is a little off. If your delivery is off, the quality of pitches isn't going to be there."
Fuentes (1-4) has converted 13-of-17 save chances, and has a 3.94 ERA. It was 2.01 before the last two games. He will need to have the problem solved before his next outing, since manager Clint Hurdle said he isn't removing Fuentes from the ninth inning.
Around this time last year, Fuentes blew four saves in a row and Hurdle replaced him with Manuel Corpas. This year, Corpas blew four saves in the first three weeks, including three in a week, and Fuentes had his old job back.
So Fuentes still has leeway.
"I'm not saying there's a perfect number, because they always hurt," Hurdle said. "One was a blown save. One was a tie ballgame. Back-to-back bad outings ... three-time All-Star ... I try to take everything into perspective."
Fuentes said he's happy he's not a starter, because he can return to the mound quickly to see if he's made the right changes.
"I already have in mind what I need to do to fix it, and there's a good chance I'm going to get to fix it today or tomorrow," Fuentes said.
