TUCSON, Ariz. -- Rockies pitcher Jeff Francis underwent arthroscopic surgery Wednesday to repair the labrum and clean up the rotator cuff in his left shoulder, the club announced.

Rockies medical director Dr. Thomas J. Noonan performed the surgery at the Steadman Hawkins Clinic in Greenwood Village, Colo. Francis will begin rehab immediately but is not expected to pitch this season. No date has been set for his return to baseball activities.

Francis suffered through shoulder pain throughout 2008 (4-10, 5.01 ERA) and attempted to avoid the surgery but opted for surgery last week. He spent more than a month on the disabled list with shoulder inflammation and did not make 30 starts or earn 13 wins in a season for the first time in his career.

In 2007, Francis went 17-9 and tied the Rockies' record for most wins in a season. Pedro Astacio accomplished the feat in 1999 and Kevin Ritz did it in 1996. Francis also won two postseason games, and the Rockies made it to their first World Series, where they were swept by the Red Sox.
