Hurdle enjoying trip back home
Colorado (16-25) at Detroit (24-16), 5:05 p.m. MT
DETROIT -- Even after a late-night flight from Atlanta to Detroit on Thursday, Rockies manager Clint Hurdle was up early Friday morning.Hurdle, a Michigan native, had to go out to see the sights in, yes, Detroit. His morning before the team's series opener against the Tigers was spent in Allen Park, Mich., at the practice facility of the Detroit Lions. He met new head coach Jim Schwartz and top draft pick Matt Stafford. Hurdle said Thursday afternoon that he was looking forward to watching the Red Wings play in the NHL Western Conference finals Friday night.
COL: RHP Jason Marquis (5-3, 4.75 ERA)
Marquis is coming off his best outing of the season, an eight-inning effort in which he allowed just one run on five hits against the Braves on Monday. In that outing, Marquis threw 71 pitches through the first four innings, and then settled in to throw just 32 through the last five. That lower pitch count was due in part to the four double plays he induced from Braves hitters using an effective sinker. Marquis hasn't faced Detroit since 2002, when he was pitching for Atlanta. DET: RHP Armando Galarraga (3-3, 5.62 ERA)
While the three starters ahead of him surge, Galarraga continues to struggle in the No. 4 spot in the Tigers' rotation. In his previous start, on Sunday, he didn't make it through the first inning, giving up five runs and recording only two outs. He has now given up at least five runs in four straight starts. With Jeremy Bonderman scheduled to make his second rehab start for Triple-A Toledo on Thursday, a rotation shakeup could be down the road. But manager Jim Leyland hasn't set any timetable for Bonderman's return nor given any indication of when a change might happen. Tidbits
