SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- The light collision between Rockies third baseman Ian Stewart and left fielder Carlos Gonzalez on Saturday turned out not as harmless as it seemed. Stewart said Sunday he will be out of game action the next 5-6 days with a low-grade sprain of the medial collateral ligament in his right knee.

Also, Gonzalez, last year's National League batting champ and a Rawlings Gold Glove Award winner, emerged with a bruised right shin. Rockies manager Jim Tracy said Gonzalez would be held out of Monday's game against the D-backs.

Gonzalez slid and Stewart didn't. Stewart had his foot caught beneath Gonzalez's leg and tumbled.

"I didn't feel it much during the game -- getting up the only thing I noticed was my hand was scraped up," Stewart said. "When I got home, I don't know if it was the adrenaline wearing off from the first game, but it was sore last night."

Stewart was examined by Rockies head athletic trainer Keith Dugger on Sunday morning.

Saturday's 8-7 victory over the D-backs came after just four Rockies full-squad practice sessions. They worked on popups between infielders and outfielders on Saturday morning. The popup occurred on the first batter of the first inning. After the game, Tracy said as the collision occurred, "I was looking for a Jolly Rancher when I saw what we were heading for."

It might have been worse than it seemed Saturday, but Stewart said it could have been a lot worse.

"My knee was very close to hitting him right in the face," Stewart said. "My ankle was underneath his feet when he slid. It kind of buckled me a little bit. It could've been real bad.

"Once I realized I wasn't going to get to it, I kind of checked up, thankfully. He slid, thankfully, on his feet, not head-first. I did see him at the last second."

A relieved Tracy said Sunday, "I'm just glad that it's a week, and not two months or the season."

Even more, Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki was heading toward foul ground at the time of the popup. Had he not pulled away, there could have been a three-way wreck involving key Rockies players.
