Todd Helton reinstated from 15-day disabled list
Club Options LHP Edwar Cabrera to Triple-A
The Colorado Rockies announced today that the club has activated Todd Helton from the 15-day disabled list. The Rockies have also optioned left-handed pitcher Edwar Cabrera to Triple-A Colorado Springs. Helton will be in uniform and available for tonight’s Rockies vs. Reds at Coors Field (6:40 p.m. MDT).
Helton, 38, is batting .235 (52-for-221) with 13 doubles, 1 triple, 7 home runs and 34 RBI in 63 games for the Rockies this season. He missed a total of 12 games while on the disabled list with left hip inflammation, during which time the Rockies went 4-8. The five-time NL All-Star is a career .320 Major League hitter (2,415-for-7,546) with 567 doubles, 36 triples, 354 home runs, 1,342 RBI, 1,358 runs scored and 1,289 walks. Helton is the Rockies career leader in all of those categories except career batting average, which he is second.
Cabrera, 24, has made two starts in his two stints with the Rockies this season, going 0-2 with a 11.12 ERA (5.2 ip, 7 er), 7 walks and 5 strikeouts. Cabrera has split the remainder of the 2012 season at Double-A Tulsa and Triple-A Colorado Springs. Between the two stops, Cabrera is 11-4 with a 3.03 ERA (118.2 ip, 40 er), 34 walks and 111 strikeouts in 19 starts. Cabrera has struck out a total of 328 batters in 285.2 innings pitched over the last two seasons in the Minor Leagues. He set a new Rockies franchise record, and led all of Minor League Baseball with his 217 strikeouts in 2001. He was originally signed by Colorado as a non-drafted free agent on March 5, 2008 from Bani, Dominican Republic.
