Padres Acquire LHP Troy Patton From The Baltimore Orioles In Exchange For C Nick Hundley and Cash Considerations
Padres also select RHP Billy Buckner from Triple-A El Paso
SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Padres today announced that they have acquired left-handed pitcher Troy Patton from the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for catcher Nick Hundley and cash considerations. In addition, the Padres selected right-handed pitcher Billy Buckner from Triple-A El Paso. Executive Vice President/General Manager Josh Byrnes made the announcement.
Patton, 28, has pitched to a 0-1 record with an 8.10 ERA (6 ER, 6.2 IP) with five strikeouts against four walks over nine relief appearances with the Orioles this season since being activated from the restricted list on May 1. Originally signed by Houston as a ninth-round selection in the 2004 First-Year Player Draft out of Tomball High School (TX), the 6-1 lefty has posted a career 5-4 record with a 3.28 ERA (6 ER, 161.2 IP) with 127 strikeouts against 42 walks to go along with a .241 opponents average over 143 Major League appearances with Houston (2007) and Baltimore (2010-14). Patton is expected to join the club on Sunday.
Buckner, 30, has pitched to a 3-0 record with a 2.89 ERA (9 ER, 28.0 IP) with 20 strikeouts against 10 walks over five starts with Triple-A El Paso this season after signing with the Padres as a minor league free agent on April 19. Originally selected by the Kansas City Royals in the second-round of the 2004 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of South Carolina, Buckner owns a lifetime 7-11 record with a 6.07 ERA (105 ER, 155.2 IP) in 43 career games, 23 starts, over parts of five Major League seasons between Kansas City (2007), Arizona (2008-10) and Los Angeles-AL (2013). The 6-2, 205 pound righty will wear jersey number 40.
Hundley, 30, hit .271 (16-for-59) with a home run, three doubles and three RBI in 33 games for San Diego this season. Originally signed by the Padres as a second-round selection in the 2005 First-Year Player Draft, Hundley has hit .238 (392-for-1,644) with 85 doubles, 11 triples, 47 home runs, 195 RBI and 161 runs scored in 510 games across seven Major League seasons, all with the Padres (2008-14).
