Padres sign OF Seth Smith to two-year contract extension through 2016 with club option for 2017
SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Padres today announced they have signed a two-year contract extension with outfielder Seth Smith through the 2016 season with a club option for the 2017 season.
Smith, 31, has hit .281 (66-for-235) with 18 doubles, four triples, nine home runs, 25 RBI and 33 runs scored in 72 games so far this season, his first campaign with the Padres. The left-handed hitter was acquired this past offseason from the Oakland Athletics in exchange for right-handed pitcher Luke Gregerson. In 42 games at home this season, Smith has hit .322 (46-for-143) with 12 doubles, four triples, seven home runs, 18 RBI and 21 runs scored. In 73 career games total at Petco Park, he has hit .311 (69-for-222) with 30 extra-base hits.
Originally signed by the Colorado Rockies as a second-round selection in the 2004 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Mississippi, Smith has hit .266 (605-for-2271) with 146 doubles, 25 triples, 82 home runs, 298 RBI and 337 runs scored in 801 games played over parts of eight Major League seasons with the Rockies (2007-11), Athletics (2012-13) and Padres (2014).
