Rockies acquire RHP Jose Capellan from Detroit in exchange for RHP Denny Bautista

NASHVILLE -- The Colorado Rockies announced today that the club has acquired right-handed pitcher Jose Capellan from Detroit in exchange for right-handed pitcher Denny Bautista.
Capellan, 26, went 0-3 with a 5.54 ERA (26.0 ip, 16 er) in 17 relief appearances between Milwaukee and Detroit in 2007. He opened the season with Triple-A Nashville in the Brewers organization and appeared mainly in relief, going 3-2 with a 3.86 ERA (28.0 ip, 12 er) in 17 games/3 starts. He was recalled by the Brewers on June 1 and went 0-2 with a 4.50 ERA (12.0 ip, 6 er) in 7 games before being traded to the Tigers on July 1. While with Detroit, the 6-foot-4, 235-pound Capellan went 0-1 with a 6.43 ERA (14.0 ip, 10 er) over 10 relief outings. He also appeared in 9 games with Triple-A Toledo, going 0-1, 5.79 (9.1 ip, 6 er) and 3 saves. The right-hander was a key part of Milwaukee's relief corps in 2006, making a career-high 61 appearances and going 4-2 with a 4.40 ERA (71.2 ip, 35 er) in his first full big league season.
Originally signed by Atlanta as a non-drafted free agent in 1998, Capellan has gone 5-7 with a 4.90 ERA (121.1 ip, 66 er) in 98 games/2 starts in his major league career with Atlanta (2004), Milwaukee (2005-07), and Detroit (2007).
Bautista, 27, has spent the past year and a half within the Rockies organization after being acquired from the Royals at the trading deadline in 2006. He went 2-1 with a 12.46 ERA (8.2 ip, 12 er) in 9 games/one start for the Rockies in 2007. This is the fourth time he has been traded in his career. Bautista has gone 4-10 with a 6.93 ERA (115.2 ip, 89 er) in 35 games/21 starts in his major league career.
