DENVER -- The Colorado Rockies announced this afternoon that right-handed pitcher Matt Herges has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with lower back stiffness. The roster move is retroactive to August 18. To take his place on the roster, the club has recalled right-handed pitcher Ryan Speier from Triple-A Colorado Springs. Speier will be available for tonight's game vs. the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Herges, 38, is 3-4 with a 5.09 ERA (58.1 ip, 33 er) in 51 games for the Rockies this season. He last pitched on August 17 at Washington, allowing consecutive singles to the only two batters he faced. Herges has allowed runs in seven of his last 10 appearances since July 21. His 51 appearances rank fourth on the club behind Manuel Corpas (59), Taylor Buchholz (54), and Brian Fuentes (53).

The 10-year major league veteran is 40-34 with 34 saves and a 3.93 ERA (650.1 ip, 284 er) in 530 games/4 starts with Los Angeles-NL (1999-2001), Montreal (2002), San Diego (2003), San Francisco (2003-05), Arizona (2005), Florida (2006) and Colorado (2007-08). He was signed by Colorado as a minor league free agent on February 12, 2007 and has pitched in 86 games for the Rockies since then. Last season he reached the postseason for the second time in his career, where he tossed 7.0 scoreless innings in seven appearances for the Rockies during the Division Series, League Championship Series and World Series.

Speier, 29, is 1-1 with a 4.66 ERA (36.2 ip, 19 er) in 30 games during two stints for the Rockies this season. He last pitched for the major league team on July 27 at Cincinnati. Speier has appeared in 72 games for the Rockies since his major league debut in 2005. He made 20 appearances for the club in 2007, finishing 3-1 with a 4.00 ERA (18.0 ip, 8 er). All three of his wins last season were recorded during the Rockies' streak of 14 wins in 15 games to close out the regular season.
