But manager Clint Hurdle said the whole experience turned out good for Hawpe. Well, it's easy to say that when it's not your batting average, but Hurdle understands hitting and knows sometimes Hawpe's brute strength can work against him.
"I think he finally got arm-weary and leg-weary in San Diego," Hurdle said. "Sometimes your greatest victories come with your biggest defeats sometimes. You finally get to a point where you throw your hands up and say, 'You know what? This isn't working the way I'm doing it.' Let me give it up and go at it a different way."
The game dropped Hawpe's average to .188. But after sitting out Friday, Hawpe pounded the Astros, going 5-for-9 (.556) in the two games he played. Hawpe also has an RBI in each of his last four games.
