The talk led to a temporary shift to the bullpen for the 27-year-old De La Rosa. He will be available in the bullpen beginning Thursday in Chicago against the Cubs.
On Monday, De La Rosa walked Jimmy Rollins and Shane Victorino in the first inning and gave up a three-run homer to Chase Utley. In 3 1/3 innings, De La Rosa threw 77 pitches, 43 for strikes, and allowed four hits, seven runs (six earned) while walking three and striking out three. His ERA jumped from 7.78 to 9.00.
"It will give him more opportunities and more chances to tighten things up," Hurdle said.
De La Rosa said he was not surprised by the club's decision after allowing 23 earned runs in 23 innings this season.
"Whatever I can do to help the team," he said.
De La Rosa was scheduled to start Saturday against the Cubs. A possible replacement could be lefty Glendon Rusch, who has been outstanding for Triple-A Colorado Springs. In 11 innings for the Sky Sox, Rusch has given up just five hits and one earned run. Batters are hitting only .135 against him.
