Rox sign 14th-round pick Massey

First baseman/outfielder inks deal one day after 19th birthday

DENVER -- Tyler Massey has been the beneficiary of two extraordinary gifts in the past year.

As an early high school graduation present, Massey attended Games 3 and 4 of the 2007 World Series at Coors Field.

"The atmosphere was fantastic," he said. "It was like a football game."

Then on Tuesday, a day after his 19th birthday, Massey -- the Rockies' 14th-round selection in the 2008 First-Year Player Draft -- signed a contract that, according to the Rocky Mountain News, included a $400,000 signing bonus.

"It's awesome," Massey said behind home plate as the Rockies took batting practice. "It's another step forward to my dream of being a Major League player. It was a great birthday present."

Prior to the Draft, Massey, a first baseman/outfielder from Baylor High School in Chattanooga, Tenn., was rated by Baseball America as the ninth-best prospect in Tennessee and the 51st-best high school prospect in the country.

Massey has closely followed the career of current Rockies first baseman Todd Helton, who grew up in nearby Knoxville, Tenn.

"He's kind of everyone's hero back home, so I would always keep up with the Rockies," said Massey, who will start with the Rookie League Casper Ghosts.

Like Helton, Massey prides himself on his strong defense as well as his offense.

"The type of player I want to be is just a consistent everyday player that helps the team," Massey said.
