"When it comes to family issues I don't push it," Hurdle said. "He needs to get back to his family and he'll come back when he can."Major League rules say a player must remain on the bereavement list for a minimum of three days and a maximum of seven.
Fuentes, who has pitched in three straight games, recorded his 26th save of the season Monday night after pitching a scoreless ninth. He has converted 13 consecutive save opportunities.Hurdle said Manuel Corpas will fill the closer's role for the time being. The Rockies recalled right-hander Steven Register from Triple-A Colorado Springs to take the empty spot in the bullpen. Register had 16 saves and a 3.32 ERA with the Sky Sox this year and struck out the only batter he faced in his Major League debut Aug. 4.
"We were looking for somebody to help us in the back of the bullpen," Hurdle said. "He has a good arm and he's had some success. He's a guy who could help us."Hurdle also said Register was a candidate to join the team when rosters expanded in September. Fuentes earned the nickname "Tito" in recognition of his California roots and former San Francisco Giants second baseman Tito Fuentes, who frequents AT&T Park.
