O'Dowd planning to evaluate coaches

Rockies GM will determine the makeup of staff for 2009

SAN FRANCISCO -- Throughout the reign of Clint Hurdle as the Rockies' manager, the return of all his coaches that wanted to return was a given. Now, it's not such a slam dunk.

Hurdle said on Wednesday that the makeup of the staff will be determined after general manager Dan O'Dowd takes some time to evaluate. Usually, by this time of year, the club announces that those who want to return are invited back. But the Rockies have gone from World Series participant in 2007 to below .500 in 2008.

With O'Dowd having been in place since October 1999 and Hurdle having been manager since taking over for Buddy Bell in April 2002, the Rockies have been among baseball's most stable on-field operations.

Bench coach Jamie Quirk, pitching coach Bob Apodaca, bench coach Rick Matthews and bullpen catcher Mark Strittmatter -- a former Rockie who offers advice to catchers -- were hired at the end of the 2002 season.

Third base coach Mike Gallego was hired after the 2004 season, and hitting coach Alan Cockrell and first base coach Glenallen Hill were hired after the 2007 season. All three were hired from the Rockies' Minor League organization.
