Three early long balls, late rally spark tie

Helton, Tulo, Spilborghs show power; Rox score three in ninth

at Tucson, Ariz.
Tuesday, March 17

Royals at the plate: Miguel Olivo parked a three-run homer in the fourth inning, part of a four-RBI day. He technically has four long balls this spring -- two for the Royals and two in the World Baseball Classic for Mexico. Tommy Murphy also went deep in the eighth. Billy Butler had two hits. Alberto Callaspo and Mitch Maier had triples.

Rockies at the plate: Todd Helton hit his third home run of the spring, a two-run shot in the first inning. Troy Tulowitzki added a two-run homer in the first, and Ryan Spilborghs added a solo in the second. Seth Smith, Clint Barmes and Carlos Gonzalez doubled. Tulowitzki drove in three runs, and the Rockies scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth.

Royals on the mound: Starter Kyle Davies gave up five runs on six hits, with three homers, three walks and a wild pitch, against two strikeouts in three innings. Yashuiko Yabuta went one inning, struck out one and walked one. Brandon Duckworth threw two scoreless innings, struck out one and gave up one hit. Roman Colon let in the tying runs in the Rockies' three-run ninth, but Devon Lowery held the deadlock with a scoreless 10th.

Rockies on the mound: Starter Ubaldo Jimenez, in his first start since returning from a breakout performance at the Classic, gave up one hit in the first three innings, but by the time he left, he had given up six hits and eight runs, with three walks and a hit batter, in 4 2/3 innings. Rockies closer candidate Manuel Corpas walked one but forced a double-play grounder in one inning.

Cactus League records: Royals 11-6-1, Rockies 8-9-1

Up next for Rockies: It's the club's only day off of Spring Training, but left-hander Greg Smith returns to work in a Minor League game at Hi Corbett Field. Smith missed all of last week with the flu. Other pitchers competing for spots with the big club that are scheduled to throw are Greg Reynolds, Ryan Speier, Josh Fogg and Matt Belisle. It's also the first Minor League appearance for righty Jason Hirsh, who had been competing for a rotation spot but was optioned to the Minors on Monday. The Rockies return to Cactus League action Thursday at 2:05 p.m. MT, with lefty Franklin Morales starting against the Dodgers at Glendale.
