Marquis, Betancourt offered arbitration
Rox decline to do the same with Torrealba, Contreras, Beimel
By Thomas Harding / MLB.com
The Rockies are trying to keep Betancourt. One way for that to happen would be for Betancourt to accept the offer, which means he would remain with Colorado. If he and the club do not reach an agreement, his salary will be set by the arbitration process. If Betancourt rejects and signs with another club, the Rockies will receive two early picks -- one from the team that signs him -- in the 2010 First-Year Player Draft as compensation, because Betancourt is rated as a Type A free agent.
Marquis is looking to cash in on his first All-Star season, which means he does not fit in the Rockies' 2010 payroll. However, if Marquis rejects the offer, as expected, Colorado will receive an extra pick between the first and second rounds of the '10 Draft. The team that signs Marquis will not lose a pick.
Free agents offered arbitration have until Monday to decide whether to accept.
Those are the only free agents who will receive arbitration offers from the Rockies. Other free agents Colorado is looking to re-sign are catcher Yorvit Torrealba, right-handed pitcher Jose Contreras and left-handed pitcher Joe Beimel.
