DENVER -- The Rockies have agreed to terms with left-handed pitcher Tyler Anderson, their first-round pick in the 2011 First-Year Player Draft, the team announced on Monday night. Anderson, the 20th overall pick, was the third left-handed pitcher the Rockies have selected in the first round the last four years. Anderson is expected to receive a deal similar to the one given to the team's 2010 first-round pick, Kyle Parker, according to MLB.com's Jonathan Mayo. Parker received a reported $1.4 million as the 26th overall pick. Anderson, a 6-foot-4, 215-pound native of Las Vegas, was the University of Oregon's staff ace last season, compiling an 8-3 record with a 2.17 ERA. He finished his junior year with a school career-record 285 strikeouts, and his 114 strikeouts this past season are a single-season school record. "We liked his athleticism, his competitiveness and his character -- they all fit what we were looking for," Rockies vice president of scouting Bill Schmidt said shortly after the team selected Anderson in the Draft. Anderson wasn't highly recruited coming out of Spring Valley High School in Las Vegas, but he said the tutelage of Oregon pitching coach Andrew Checketts helped the left-hander realize his potential. "I think the college experience definitely helped me polish [my game]," Anderson said a few days after the Draft. "Coach Checketts is a great pitching coach here, and he's just really good at developing players." The signing of Anderson added to those of compensatory-round pick Trevor Story (45th overall) and second-round pick Carl Thomore (77th). Both players signed shortly after the Draft. Baseball America reported that the Rockies did not reach a deal with third-round pick Peter O'Brien before Monday night's 10:01 p.m. MT deadline.
