Nicasio faces Minor Leaguers in tune-up for season

SALT LAKE CITY -- Rockies right-hander Juan Nicasio struck out nine in seven innings in his final tuneup for the regular season -- a camp game against a Triple-A Rockies roster at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick on Friday.

Nicasio, who will start the third game of the regular season on Wednesday at Milwaukee, threw 104 pitches and gave up three runs on three hits and two walks.

During a spring spent working on a changeup to offset his fastball and slider, Nicasio went 1-1 with a 4.87 ERA in six games, including five starts, in Cactus League play. He struck out 17 against nine walks, and opponents hit .305 against him.

Nicasio, 26, has appeared with the Rockies the last two seasons, but injuries have limited him to 24 big league starts -- 13 in 2011 before a line drive hit him in the head and left him with a broken neck, and 11 the year before he suffered a season-ending right knee injury in early June.
