DENVER -- The Rockies will recall left-hander Christian Friedrich to start on Saturday afternoon against the Brewers at Coors Field. It will be Friedrich's first Major League appearance since July 28, 2012, his last appearance before being shut down for the season with a back injury.
Friedrich made just four starts last season while recovering and was still regaining his timing when the Minors season began. This season, he is 1-8 with a 7.89 ERA in 13 starts at Triple-A Colorado Springs.
The start was open because the Rockies optioned righty Juan Nicasio (5-5, 5.92 ERA in 14 starts) to Colorado Springs on Monday. Also, four starters -- righty Eddie Butler (right shoulder inflammation), righty Jordan Lyles (broken left hand), lefty Brett Anderson (broken left index finger) and righty Tyler Chatwood (right flexor tendon strain) are on the disabled list.
Friedrich, the Rockies' top pick in 2008 out of Eastern Kentucky, has shown flashes but also battled injury throughout his career. He broke in with the big club in 2012, going 5-8 with a 6.17 ERA in 16 starts before the stress fracture in his lower back.
Friedrich will be the 11th pitcher to start for the Rockies this year. Entering Thursday, the Rockies were tied with the Rangers among Major League teams for most starting pitchers used this season.
