Cuddyer takes swings, still a few weeks away

DETROIT -- Michael Cuddyer continues to nurse the left shoulder injury that has sidelined him since June 5. The veteran outfielder progressed to swinging off a tee on Friday.

Rockies manager Walt Weiss said that, if it was up to Cuddyer, he'd be in the lineup Friday night. But "he's still a few weeks away."

"I got a really good report about his work in the cage," Weiss said. "Everything's a go. We're going to start giving him more and more.

"He's on the road to recovery. He's on his way back."

Cuddyer was hitting .317 with an .866 OPS in 31 games before being injured.

After getting extra rest, Matzek to start on Saturday

DETROIT -- After tossing two-thirds of an inning in the Rockies' 16-inning game on Tuesday, rookie Tyler Matzek was in need of a little extra rest.

He was scratched from his Thursday start, but manager Walt Weiss revealed Friday that he'll be good to go for Saturday night against the Tigers.

"We felt like we just needed to get him a couple more days," Weiss said. "We didn't feel like we had to make any big adjustments. Just wanted to get him a couple more days of rest."

Yohan Flande had previously been scheduled to start Saturday but is in the bullpen for now in a long-relief role.

Rockies could get Lyles back during homestand

DETROIT -- Jordan Lyles threw 4 2/3 scoreless innings on Thursday night for Triple-A Colorado Springs as he continues to rehab a broken bone in his left hand.

"Things went well for him last night," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said.

The encouraging start means that the Rockies will be examining the possibility of Lyles starting a game during the team's next homestand, which begins Tuesday against the Cubs.

"Jordan's an option," Weiss said. "We have the off-day when we go back home and there's a chance that he could be slotted in on that homestand. We're still trying to line up some things because we do have the off-day. Jordan could certainly be one of those pieces."

Lyles has been out since June 4.
