Padres win one challenge, lose another

SAN DIEGO -- It sure didn't take long Wednesday for San Diego skipper Bud Black to issue a manager's challenge in the Padres' 5-3 win over the Rockies.

Black protested a close call at first base after leadoff hitter Yangervis Solarte was called out on a close play when shortstop Josh Rutledge threw to first from deep in the hole near third base.

Replay officials quickly overturned the call and Solarte was awarded a hit.

This became important when, later in the inning, Jedd Gyorko singled to right field and Solarte advanced to third base, from which he scored on Rene Rivera's RBI single to give the Padres a 1-0 lead.

Black was at it again in the eighth inning when he issued another manager's challenge on Chris Nelson's attempt to steal second base.

Nelson was called out on the play and Black challenged the call. After a review, the call stood.

Black is now 12-for-22 in challenge attempts this season.
