After erupting for eight runs in the first three innings, the Rockies hitting calmed down. Taylor Buchholz allowed four earned runs on nine hits in four innings. In his return to the lineup, center fielder Willy Taveras went 1-for-3 with three runs scored, two stolen bases and an RBI.
After John Van Benschoten exited after allowing nine runs in only two-plus innings, the Pirates bullpen held the Rockies in check. Five relievers combined to throw seven innings, allowing only one run (unearned) on two hits. Ryan Doumit led the Pirates, going 2-for-5 with two RBIs.
