MANAGING/COACHING CAREER: Runnells begins his seventh full season, and eighth season overall, as Colorado's bench coach … 2015 is his 13th season with the Rockies organization … in addition to his role on Walt Weiss' staff, Runnells also runs the day-to-day operations for Major League Spring Training, coordinating all team meetings, workouts and drills for all players and staff members … prior to joining the Rockies Major League coaching staff midseason of 2009, he was in his fourth season as manager of the Triple-A Colorado Springs Sky Sox … at that time, Runnells had the club in first place of the Pacific Coast League North Division with a record of 28-18 … overall he compiled a 234-242 (.492) record as manager of the Sky Sox in his three-and-a-half seasons, and his 234 wins are the second-most for a manager in Sky Sox history, behind former Astros Manager Brad Mills (271 wins, 1994-96) … prior to taking over managerial duties for the Sky Sox in 2006, Runnells was manager of the Rockies' Double-A affiliate, the Tulsa Drillers, from 2004-05 … before joining the Rockies system, Runnells spent 11 years in the Detroit Tigers organization, serving as Minor League roving hitting instructor (1999-2003), advance scout (1997-98), manager at Triple-A Toledo (1995-96), manager at Double-A Trenton (1994) and London (1993) … Runnells managed the Montreal Expos for parts of two seasons (1991-92), where he compiled a record of 68-81 (.456) … at the time Runnells was named manager of the Expos on June, 3, 1991, he was 36 years old, which at the time was the youngest manager in baseball.

PLAYING CAREER: Runnells played 10 seasons of professional baseball, which included 40 Major League games as an infielder for the Cincinnati Reds (1985-86) … was originally signed by the San Francisco Giants as an amateur free agent in 1977 and signed as a free agent with the Reds in 1983 … he retired after the 1986 season and was given his first managerial job with the Reds' Double-A club, Vermont, in 1987.

PERSONAL: Thomas William Runnells … he and his wife, Chrys, have a daughter, Riley … Runnells also has two grown children, April and Tom Jr. … Chrys was the lead anchor for WTOL-TV, the CBS affiliate in Toledo, Ohio, for several years before retiring in 2014 … Runnells is a native of Colorado and a graduate of Greeley West High School and the University of Northern Colorado.
